  • Master of Business Administration (MBA) is a post graduate programme in management.   • IIMs are India's premier institutes providing quality education in management and research. IIMs mainly offer post graduate, doctoral and executive education programmes. The flagship programme of IIMs is the two year post graduate diploma (PGDM).
  • The Common Admission Test (CAT) is a computer based test conducted by Indian Institutes of Management (IIMs) as a pre-requisite for admission to various management programmes. Admission to the two year PGDM programmes in IIMs are on merit, based on a rigorous selection process comprising of Personal Interview, Written Ability Test / Group Discussions, and scores in CAT. The test is conducted every year by one of the IIMs based on a policy of rotation.
  • CAT scores are also accepted by IITs & IISc for their management programmes & many more elite B-Schools such as FMS, MDI,SP JAIN, JBIMS, NITIE, IMI, FORE, KJ SOMAIYA, BIM, IFMR, etc. as well. It is one of the most sought-after entrance exams after graduation for the quality of opportunities it opens up.

CAT Pattern

  • The duration of the examination will be 180 minutes. There will be three sections:
    Section I: Verbal Ability and Reading Comprehension, 34 Questions
    Section II: Data Interpretation and Logical Reasoning, 32 Questions
    Section III: Quantitative Ability, 34 Questions

    Some questions in each section are not multiple choice type & direct answers are to be typed on the screen. For non-MCQ no negative marking & -1 for MCQ for incorrect answer.3 marks are assigned for correct MCQs & non- MCQs answer Candidates will be allotted exactly 60 minutes for answering questions in each section and they cannot switch from one section to another while answering questions in a section.
  • Score: The scaled scores is obtained by the process of normalization across different test slots & sections and then converted into percentiles for purposes of short listing. The IIMs shortlists candidates by the process of Written Ability Test, Group Discussion and Personal Interview for second stage of selection. Performance in CAT is an important component of selection process. IIMs may consider previous academic record, work experience and other similar parameters in their selection process.
