TOEFL Facts

  • Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) is a standardized test to measure the ability to use and understand English at the university. It accurately measures how well students can read, listen, speak and write in English to perform academic tasks. More than 9,000 colleges, universities, agencies and other institutions in over 130 English-speaking countries, including Australia, Canada, the U.K. and the United States accept TOEFL scores.
  • More than 30 million people from all over the world have taken the TOEFL test to demonstrate their English-language proficiency. TOEFL scores are used by Higher education institutions for student admissions, Immigration departments to issue residential and work visas, Medical and licensing agencies for professional certification purposes & Individuals to measure their progress in learning English. The TOEFL internet based test is offered more than 50 times a year at authorized test centers around the world. One cannot take the test more than once in a 12-day period.

TOEFL Pattern

  • It takes up to 4 hours to complete The TOEFL internet based test. The test has four sections. . There is a mandatory 10 minute break mid-way through the testing session. The test may include extra questions in the Reading or Listening section that do not count toward score.
  • Reading: Reading tasks comprises 3 or 4 passages from academic texts and answering questions. Test time limit is 60-80 minutes with 36-56 questions
  • Listening: Listening tasks comprises lectures, classroom discussions & conversations and then answering questions. Test time limit is 60-90 minutes with 34-51 questions.
  • Speaking: Speaking section comprises 6 tasks in 20 minutes time limit. Tasks include expressing opinion on a familiar topic; speaking based on reading & listening tasks.
  • Writing: Writing section comprises 2 tasks in 50 minutes time limit. Tasks include writing essay responses based on reading & listening tasks; support an opinion in writing.
  • TOEFL Score: Each of four sections (Reading, Listening, Speaking and Writing) of TOEFL exam scores is reported on a fixed scale range of 0-30 & Total score is scaled 0-120. Although the score range for each of the four test sections (Listening, Reading, Speaking, and Writing) is from 0 to 30, each section is a separate measure and each measure has its own scale. The writing section is scored by both human raters & e-rater. TOEFL scores are valid for two years after the test date.
  • Sore Report: One can cancel score when finish taking the test s. If cancelled, they can not be viewed or reported to any institutions. Canceled scores can be reinstated if request is received at ETS no later than 60 days after test date. The TOEFL score can be viewed online (one can also download & print) approximately 10 days after test date. Printed score reports are mailed approximately 13 days after test date. TOEFL test fee includes 4 free official score reports to be sent to the institutions & agencies that one selects before the test. Further more, one can has the Writing and/or Speaking section of your test reviewed up to 30 days after the test date. Scores cannot be reviewed if one has already requested that they be sent to an institution or agency.
