GRE Facts

  • The Graduate Record Examination (GRE) is a standardized test, accepted by thousands of graduate & business schools worldwide, most in the United States. Prospective graduate and business school applicants from all around the world who want to do a Master's, MBA, specialized master's in business or doctoral degree take the GRE General Test.
  • The GRE General Test is available at more than 1,000 test centers in more than 160 countries. It is offered as a computer delivered test year round at most locations around the world. GRE test scores are valid for five years after test administration date.
  • One can retake the test and then decide which scores to send to schools. The computer-based GRE can be taken once every 21 days, up to five times within any continuous period of 12 months. This includes test attempts in which the score was cancelled by the candidate.

GRE Pattern

  • The overall testing time for the computer delivered GRE General Test is about 3 hours & 45 minutes. There are six sections with a 10 minute break following the third section.

Analytical Writing: The Analytical test time is 60 minutes, i.e. 30 minutes per task.
Verbal Reasoning: It comprises two sections, with 20 questions per section. The Verbal Reasoning test time is 30 minutes per section.
Quantitative Reasoning: It consists two sections, with 20 questions per section. The Quantitative Reasoning test time is 30 minutes per section.
  • The Analytical Writing section is always first. The Verbal Reasoning, Quantitative Reasoning & unidentified unscored section that does not count towards final score may appear in any order. An identified research section that does not count toward score may be included in place of the unscored section. The research section will always appear at the end of the test.
  • It is a multistage test & allows a test taker to freely move forward and backward throughout an entire section. The Verbal Reasoning and Quantitative Reasoning measures are section-level adaptive. This means the computer selects the second section of a measure based on the performance on the first section.
  • Verbal Reasoning & Quantitative Reasoning Scores: The scaled score of the GRE General Test ranges 40 points, i.e. from 130 to 170. Within each section, all questions contribute equally to the final score. For each of the two measures, a raw score is computed. The raw score is converted to scaled score looking at the number of correct answers & difficulty level.
  • Analytical Writing Score: It is reported on a six point scale (0-6), in half point increments. Each easy is scored by at least one trained reader & automated scoring engine. The final scores of the two essays are averaged and rounded to the nearest half-point interval on the 0-6 score scale. A single score is reported for the Analytical Writing measure.
  • Sending scores: The unofficial scores (without score of Analytical Writing) can be viewed after test, then send to designated score recipients and the scores will become a part of reportable history. If one cancels scores without viewing, then they will not be part of reportable history. The official Scores can be sent to up to four graduate institutions or fellowship sponsors at no extra cost approximately 10-15 days after test date.
